Nov. 30, 2001

University of Kentucky men’s golf Coach Brian Craig announced the signing of two top recruits on Friday, Nov. 30. Mark Erlewine and Tyler Wilson will both join the Wildcat squad in the fall of 2002.

Erlewine, a Union, Ky., native, has had an outstanding year winning the GenerationNext Tour Championship, claiming runner-up honors in the Baker-Geary-Dunn Tour Championship and finishing fourth in the Kentucky State Junior Championship. The Covington Catholic High School senior was also the youngest player in history to reach the semi-finals of the Greater Cincinnati Men’s Amateur Championship.

“Mark is a very strong player with tremendous character and a text-book golf swing,” Craig said. “I anticipate he will impact our team immediately. I am excited Mark has decided to become a Wildcat. He is exactly the type of student-athlete I want in our program.”

Wilson, a local product from Lexington, also has an impressive list of achievements. The Paul Laurence Dunbar senior finished second in the 2001 National PGA Junior Series and the 2001 Nike Winternationals Junior Series. Wilson also shot the lowest round of the 2001 U.S. Junior Qualifying with his second-round 66.

“The combination of Tyler’s excellent fundamentals and passion for golf makes him a perfect fit for our program,” Craig said. “I firmly believe he has the skills to develop into a terrific player in the Southeastern Conference and help our team achieve its goals.”
