Keri Boyce, a junior forward on the University of Kentucky women’s soccer team, has been named to the Verizon Academic All-District IV first team, while seniors Melinda Buemi, Susie Ledzianowski, and Beth Wells, and sophomore Jen Wilkinson earned second-team honors. The teams were elected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America from District IV, which encompasses Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee.

“As a coach, it’s wonderful to see your athletes excelling not only on the field, but especially in the classroom,” Coach Warren Lipka said. “These honors are a testament to their dedication and hard work as student-athletes and I’m very proud of their accomplishments.”

Boyce, a Marketing major with a 3.81 grade point average, is a two-time Southeastern Conference Women’s Soccer Academic Honor Roll selection and was voted second-team All-SEC in 2001, posting four goals (three game-winners) and six assists for 14 points. The Birdsboro, Pa. native has started in all 62 games played in three seasons for the Wildcats, and currently ranks third in UK career points (75), shots (183), goals (28) and assists (19).

Buemi anchored the UK defense for four years, starting in 78 of 79 games played. Posting a 3.407 GPA in Biology, the Westerville, Ohio (Westerville North) native captured SEC All-Tournament team honors in 2001 and is a three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll.

Ledzianowski (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) was named to the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week for Sept. 17-23, 2001. Majoring in Communication with a 3.649 GPA, the senior Wildcat captain played 83 career games in the midfield, tallying 11 goals and 11 assists in four seasons.

Wells was the only Wildcat to garner SEC Player of the Week accolades last season, receiving the honor for the week of Sept. 17-23, 2001. The Cincinnati, Ohio (Turpin) native claimed a spot on the SEC All-Tournament team as a senior and is UK’s all-time leader in goals against average, posting a 1.06. A three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll pick, Wells carries a 3.475 GPA in Kinesiology.

Wilkinson owns an unblemished 4.00 GPA in Communication. One of two Cats on the 2001 roster from Illinois (Downers Grove South), Wilkinson split time in the UK defense and midfield, collecting a goal and three assists in 19 starts as a sophomore.

In addition to excelling in the classroom, these five Wildcats helped UK earn its fifth berth to the NCAA Tournament in 2001. The Cats went 12-8-1/5-4 SEC and claimed a spot in the 2001 SEC Tournament for the ninth consecutive year, tying them with Vanderbilt as the only two SEC schools to play in the tournament since the conference sanctioned a champion in 1993.
