LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will close out the 2001-02 home schedule on Saturday, Feb. 2, as the Wildcats host Indiana and Cincinnati at the Lancaster Aquatic Center for an 11 a.m. meet. The meet will be the final home contest for eight seniors (five women, three men) and will also serve as the final tune-up before both squads head to Fayetteville, Ark., for the Southeastern Conference Championships from Feb. 18-24.

Both the men’s (2-4, 1-4 Southeastern Conference) and women’s (2-5, 1-5 SEC) teams collected a win in their last meet as the men defeated No. 9 South Carolina, 124-119, and the women defeated Arkansas, 156.50-86.50, on Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Lancaster Aquatic Center.

The men have been paced all season by sophomore Joey Faltraco. The Union Mills, N.C., native already holds three school records (100 backstroke, 200 backstroke, 400 IM), establishing the new standard in the 100 backstroke (49.76) against South Carolina.

The women have had many individuals step up during the season. Freshmen Marci Vrooman and Chrissy Miller, sophomore Shawna Sechrist and senior Carolyn Rader have already met NCAA “B” cuts.

The Wildcat seniors are Sarah Carter, Debra Hinsley, Sarah Hoppe, Aaron Kirkpatrick, David Kuendig, Derek Perkins, Carolyn Rader and Tracy Sullivan.The Bearcat men (4-5) are coming off a 133-129 victory over Kenyon. Senior Ryan McNally paced the UC men by taking home first in the 100 butterfly (48.87) and 200 butterfly (1:50.19) and was a member of the 200 medley relay winning team.

The UC women (4-2) also took home a victory over Kenyon, winning 181-79. Senior Marein de Jong was the top Cat, winning the 50 freestyle (23.71), 100 freestyle (51.74) and 100 butterfly (56.79) and swam a leg for the winning 200 medley relay squad.

The Indiana men (2-3) come into the meet having split a double dual meet with Iowa and defending Big Ten Champion Minnesota on Jan. 26. IU defeated the Hawkeyes, 169-130, but fell to the Golden Gophers, 200.5-98.5.

The Hoosier women (5-1-1) also split a double dual meet their last time out. Senior Susan Woessner led IU to a victory over Michigan State, 278-90, as she set a new school record in the 200 backstroke (1:59.01) while also winning the 100 backstroke (55.36). IU fell to Penn State, 209-159, to close out the competition.

Last season, the UK men defeated the Hoosiers, 149-94, for their first ever victory over their interstate foes. The UK men also defeated the Bearcats, 128-107. In the women’s lanes during the 2000-01 season, UK downed Cincinnati, 131-109, but fell to IU, 149-94.
