In the second game of the double dip, UK squandered a two-run lead and left seven runners on base as All-America outfielder Burney Hutchinson’s three-run homer in the eighth proved the difference in a 5-4 UK setback. Junior right-hander Scott Wade (3-5) pitched five innings without allowing a Rebel to cross home plate but suffered the loss. Senior righty Pete Montrenes, Collegiate Baseball’s preseason SEC Pitcher of the Year, lasted 7.1 innings to earn the win (6-2).
The Wildcats lit the scoreboard in the first when Caleb Stewart brought Spencer Graeter home on a sacrifice fly. Adding to its lead, UK took a 2-0 advantage when Brad Pickrell launched his second home run of the season in the third inning.
Behind home runs by Jonathan Swearingen, who went 3-for-5 to pace the Rebs, and Hutchinson, Ole Miss owned a 5-3 edge heading into the bottom of the ninth. The Cats put on their rally caps and had the game-winning run on base after Morris and Cory Hahn reached on base on balls. Freshman Emory Davies came through in the clutch with a RBI single down the right field line, scoring Morris. Adam Yates, earning his fifth save on the season, shut door on the Cats’ comeback attempt, retiring Brent Stephens on strikes and forcing Brad Pickrell to ground to the mound. Yates fielded the ball and fired home to get Hahn who was charging home for the tying run.
Kentucky and Ole Miss will play the third game of the series on Easter Sunday, March 31 with a first-pitch time of 1:30 p.m. at Cliff Hagan Stadium. Hahn (2-3, 3.50 ERA), a sophomore righty, will take the mound for UK, while the Rebels will send out freshman right-hander Alan Horne (0-1, 8.38 ERA).
