Lexington, Ky. – The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team will begin its quest for a national championship on Friday, May 10 when it faces the Boston University Terriers at 2 p.m. in the opening round of the 2002 NCAA Tennis Championships. As a top 16 seed and the regional’s No. 1 seed, the Wildcats will host their first- and second-round matches, with action taking place in the friendly confines of Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center on the UK campus.
Along with Kentucky and Boston, Georgia Tech and Michigan will also be competing at the NCAA Regional in Lexington. Matches will begin on Friday morning with Georgia Tech battling Michigan at 10 a.m. Kentucky and Boston follow in the afternoon to see which will face the Georgia Tech/Michigan winner in the regional final. The final will be played on Saturday, May 11 at 4 p.m., with the winner advancing to the round of 16 in Palo Alto, Calif.
“We are excited and thrilled to be hosting this regional,” Coach Mark Guilbeau said. “This is a big opportunity for us and it is what we have worked toward all season. The teams coming to Lexington are all quality teams and we will have to stay focused and play great if we want to advance to the Sweet 16.”
