Lexington, Ky. – The 17th-ranked University of Kentucky women’s tennis team cruised into the second round of the 2002 NCAA Women’s Tennis regional on Friday, May 10 with a 4-0 win over Boston University at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center. The Wildcats utilized their home-court advantage to register the shutout win over the Terriers and take one step closer to the Sweet 16.
True to form, the Cats began the match with an impressive doubles performance that gave them the early 1-0 lead. Eighth-ranked Carolina Mayorga and Sarah Witten started things off by defeating Christina Causway and Lindsey Dynof on court one before Lauren Rookledge and Leigh Bradwell secured the doubles point with an 8-2 win on court two.
In singles action, UK was able to score three quick wins to claim the match and claim an opening round victory. Junior Amy Trefethen, Bradwell and Witten all picked up singles wins on the day. Trefethen and Bradwell scored impressive straight-set victories on courts four and six, respectively. Witten then clinched the Wildcat victory with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Dynof on court two.
“I am extremely pleased with the play of this team today,” Coach Mark Guilbeau said. “Boston is a quality team and we came out and played focused and with intensity. We believe that achieving our goal of making the round of 16 is well within reach. Today, we showed exactly how capable we actually are.”
The Wildcats will now prepare to face 22nd-ranked Georgia Tech for a spot in the next round. The remaining 16 teams after this weekend’s regional play will all earn a spot in Palo Alto, Calif., on the campus of Stanford University. The Yellow Jackets and Wildcats will square off on Saturday, May 11 at 4 p.m., at the Boone Tennis Center on the UK campus.
