The Kentucky men’s soccer team (6-3-0) defeated in-state rival Louisville (2-7-1) on Wednesday night at Cardinal Stadium, by a score of 1-0. Kentucky sophomore Jamal Shteiwi scored his second game-winner of the season at the 49:49, and senior goalkeeper Greg Raber earned his fourth shutout of the season, making three saves and stopping a Louisville penalty kick.

The teams played a scoreless first half, without too many chances. Each squad had four shots in the half, but there were only three total shots on goal. Kentucky’s Raber was only forced to make one save in the half, while his Cardinal counterpart, David Gisler, made two saves.

In the second half, the Cats went on the attack early. Shteiwi scored the game’s first goal in the 50th minute. He dribbled the ball straight down the middle of the field and launched a shot that beat Louisville’s Brad Sokolowski, who had entered the U of L lineup at halftime, into the left side-netting.

In the 66th minute, a UK handball in the 18-yard box resulted in a Louisville penalty kick. The Cardinal’s Courtenay Commander took the PK, but Kentucky’s Raber dove to his right to make a game-saving stop.

The two teams battled for the final 20 minutes, with action going from end-to-end, but neither team finding the net. The Wildcats held on to earn their fourth shutout victory of the season, the 11th of Raber’s career at Kentucky.

“This was a hard-played match. Our effort, intensity and work-rate were outstanding,” Coach Collins said. “I thought we were poised to score two or three more out there, but this was a good win in a very tough place to play.”

The Wildcats remain on the road this weekend when they travel to Rock Hill, S.C., to face Winthrop University at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6.
