The University of Kentucky men’s soccer team will remain on the road this weekend as they travel to Rock Hill, S.C., to face Winthrop. The match, scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Sun., Oct. 6 at Eagle Stadium, will be UK’s final non-conference road match of the regular season.
The Cats have won five of their last six matches, including a 1-0 victory against in-state rival Louisville on Wednesday. In that match, sophomore forward Jamal Shteiwi scored his second game-winner of the season and senior goalkeeper Greg Raber posted the 11th shutout of his UK career, stopping a penalty kick to keep the Cardinals scoreless.
Kentucky, from the Mid-American Conference, has a 5-0 advantage in the all-time series against Winthrop, from the Big South. Until this season, the Cats had an unblemished record against the Big South, and they will be looking to avenge a Sept. loss to Coastal Carolina.
“Winthrop has a great attack-minded team,” Coach Ian Collins said. “They are relentless in the attacking third of the field and have been scoring goals at will. We will have to defend very well and be very focused to stop them.”
The Eagles come into Sunday’s match with a record of 5-2-1. They have won their last four matches by an average of four and a half goals. Senior Francis Wakhisi has scored 10 goals in eight games in the Winthrop midfield.
