The University of Kentucky rifle team opened its 2002-03 campaign in West Point, N.Y. on Saturday, Oct. 5 in a triple-match against Army and University of Texas-El Paso. The Cats, ranked national No. 2 after being runner-up in the 2002 NCAA Championships, took second place with a combined score of 6106. Kentucky fell to Great American Rifle Conference opponent and host school, Army by seven points (6113). UTEP, a non-league opponent, took third place with a combined score of 6038.
The Wildcats found themselves on top after outshooting the two teams in smallbore competition. Junior Melody Cook shot an 1146 and Lindsey Meagher gave an 1167. Crystal Hamilton and Robert Krukoski also added to UK’s total, 4588. Cook performed a new personal best of 398 in air rifle action, but Army came back with a 28-point margin over UK, 1546-1518 to take the match.
The Rifle Cats start the new season 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the GARC. UK will take a break from competition until Oct. 26, when Kentucky plays host to Ohio State University in Buell Armory on the UK campus.
