South Carolina 16, Kentucky 12

UK Head Coach Guy Morriss

On early penalties and their effect…
“Penalties in general hurt the team, especially holding. They’re drive killers. They never come at a good time. They’re tough for any team to overcome, I don’t care how good you are. That’s something that we are going to get corrected.”

On the difference between the first and second halves…
“Well we struggled in the first half and then we struggled even more in the second. We just couldn’t get into a rhythm.”

On coming up just short against SEC competition…
“It doesn’t feel good to come close and we won’t get any better until we get our mistakes corrected.”

On South Carolina’s controversial touchdown…
“The referee said it didn’t see it. To me it looked like the guy shovled it into the endzone, that’s what it looked like on the replay. When the ref said it didn’t see it that’s all I needed to hear.”

On how South Carolina played…
“They didn’t do anything tricky, they just played it straight up.”

UK PLAYERS

# 18 Otis Grisby

On the call concerning South Carolina’s touchdown…
“We actually had the ball but things just didn’t work out. The longer you’re in the pile, the longer they have before the ref sees. Basically, the ref makes the call based on what he sees.”

On moving forward with the season…
“Arkansas is a great team and we have a week and I feel a lot better about a week. I don’t want to sit on that loss more than a week.”

#17 Tommy Cook

On final Hail-Mary pass…
“It’s just a matter of execution. Jared and I just weren’t on the same page and it was a crucial time that just didn’t work out.”

On the loss…
“A loss is a loss and we have to circle the wagons and get back to work tomorrow.”

# 68 Jeremy Caudill

On the loss…
“It hurts a lot and it’s going to hurt a while. We’ll come in tomorrow and talk about it and hopefully that will be it and we’ll move on to Arkansas.”

On the play of USC QB Corey Jenkins…
“We were watching the run all night long, but we knew he was capable of long passes too. We got burnt on it a couple of times. We just needed to work more as a team.”

#20 Artose Pinner

On the costly penalties…
“The lack of concentration has definitely hurt us the past two games. We just haven’t executed. That’s something we’re going to take a look at next week. It’s something we just have to find a way to correct. Staying focused and eliminating the turnovers; that’s the key for us.”

“I felt like the defense gave its all tonight, but they need to know that the offense has their back.”

#22 Jared Lorenzen

“We killed ourselves tonight. We were shooting ourselves in the foot. We’ve got to find a way to make the plays.”

“We’ve just got to work on the little things. We’ve got to get ready for Arkansas. We can’t be thinking about South Carolina. We will make our corrections and go on.”

South Carolina Head Coach Lou Holtz

“This was a great football game tonight. We beat a very good team with a lot of talent and they made some great plays. To be down 10-0 with the crowd against you and to come out in the second half to win is very good for a team. I was a little disappointed in our kicking game but I think our defense played excellent tonight. It was great comeback victory for us and it’s hard to have a comeback victory on the road. This was our fourth win in a row, our third conference victory and our second conference win on the road. Our guys are pretty beat up and we face LSU next week, so we will see about our condition come Monday for that game.”

“I think the special part of the win for us is that Kentucky scores 20 out of 21 times when they are inside the 20 and the one time they couldn’t do it, they could have won the game.”

“We played with some great pressure tonight, but what I was shocked by was the play at third and 15. It was just a great play by Lorenzen and the receiver. Geez, that throw Lorenzen had was great and that receiver went right for it. It was like he was coming off a trampoline or something. To have Lorenzen duck under you is one thing I thought was not possible at all. Who would think that he could duck under anyone.”

“We really wanted to excel in goal line defense. Tonight we had our normal defense with great goal line coverage. That’s something we worked really hard on during the week of practice. To see it work out and bring us this great team win is wonderful”

USC PLAYERS

Langston Moore, Nose Tackle

On winning the close game…
“We were due a win like this after the Georgia game. Everybody really gave great effort tonight. A lot of young guys made big plays for us. It was definitely a complete team game.”

On the defensive strategy…
“We tried to stop their running game first. We thought we’d be okay if we could make Kentucky one-dimensional and force (Jared) Lorenzen to win the game for them. We were able to weather the storm tonight and win the game.”

On the defense’s play inside the 20…
“One of our goals was to stop them in the red zone – they’ve been red hot down there this year. Our defense came together and played big when it counted.”

Troy Williamson, Wide Receiver

On the two different halves…
“We started off very slowly, but we knew we were alright. We told the defense at halftime that we were sorry for keeping them out there for so long. In the second half, we came out and played our game.”

On his 59-yard reception…
“The play was just a speed-out. As soon as I saw the corner break, I went. When the ball was in the air I just tried to keep my feet in bounds.”

Ryan Brewer, Running Back

On halftime adjustments…
“In the second half we threw the ball a little more, but we didn’t really change our plan. We knew what their defense was doing at that point, and we felt like our plays would work – we just had to execute.”
