Tampa, Fla. – The UK men’s golf team was on the 11th hole of the third round when tournament officials called the match due to inclement weather. The stoppage of play gave the Cats a second place finish in the Gary Koch/Cleveland Golf Invitational, three strokes behind tournament winner Florida, who won their third consecutive Gary Koch title.
“I’m really disappointed we didn’t get to finish,” UK Coach Brian Craig said. “It was going down to the wire between us, Florida and Arkansas, I wish we could’ve finished.
“I’m very happy with the way the team played and I’m confident we will win our first tournament real soon.”
The second place finish is the best for the Cats so far this year, they finished third in last week’s Adams Cup at Rhode Island.
Three Wildcat golfers were able to finish in the top 20. Senior Ryan Coyne followed up his first-first round 69 with a one-under 71 to land in fifth place, in the individual field, at 4-under par. Sophomores Brandon Waldrop and John Holmes each fired second-round 70s to finish at 3-under and 2-under respectively.
Sophomore Matt Wells finished even, while senior Andy Dustman finished at 4-over par. Freshman Matt Kohn, who was playing as an individual, followed up an opening-round 77 with a 3-under 69 to finish in 38th place at 2-over par.
The Cats’ next tournament will be the Country Club of Louisiana Intercollegiate in Baton Rouge, La., beginning Monday, Oct. 28.
