For the fifth consecutive year, UK women’s tennis will be represented in the finals of the ITA/Southeast Regional Championships.

This year it will be in the doubles bracket as seniors Jill Buckley and Amy Trefethen defeated the top-seeded Duke team of Kelly McCain and Hillary Adams, 8-2, at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center on Sunday. McCain and Adams are ranked No. 9 in the country, Buckley and Trefethen are ranked No. 41.

On Monday, Buckley and Trefethen will take on the seventh-seeded team, Kendrick Bunn and Kate Pinchbeck from UNC-Chapel Hill, for the championship. Their appearance in the finals assures them of a spot in the ITA/National Indoor Championships to be played Nov. 7-10 in Dallas, Texas. Sarah Witten and Nathalie Roels hope to gain a “wild-card” spot in the tournament based on their performance as a doubles team throughout the fall season.

In singles action, Roels and Witten each had their tournaments end in the semi-finals.

In the quarters, Roels defeated 11th-seeded Aniela Mojzis from UNC-Chapel Hill, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 and was eliminated by Clemson’s Julie Coin, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Witten defeated Dukes fifth-seeded Saras Arasu, 7-6, 7-6, in the quarters and had to retire due to a back injury during the second set of her semi-final match with Kate Pinchbeck. No UK women qualified to participate in the singles draw at the ITA/National Indoor Championship.

“This is the most impressive regional I’ve seen,” Coach Mark Guilbeau said. “It’s unfortunate that we won’t have any of the girls in singles at the national’s but we’ve clearly shown that we are one of the best teams in the country and I expect us to keep playing well.”
