Winston-Salem, N.C. – The UK doubles team of Jill Buckley and Amy Trefethen defeated UNC-Chapel Hill’s Kate Pinchbeck and Kendrick Bunn, 8-3, on Monday to claim the championship at the ITA/Southeast Regional Tournment being played at Wake Forest.
Buckley and Trefethen, who are ranked No. 41 nationally as a doubles team, were seeded third in the field of 64 at the Southeast Regionals. To reach the finals they defeated the top seeded Duke team of Hillary Adams and Kelly McCain, who are ranked No. 9 in the country. With the win, Buckley and Trefethen are granted an automatic berth into 16-team field at the Omni Hotels Intercollegiate National Indoor Championships in Dallas, Texas on Nov. 7.
Over the last seven years, Kentucky has played in the finals of the Southeast Regional six times. This is the fourth time the Cats have sent somebody to nationals.
“I am very happy for Jill and Amy,” Coach Mark Guilbeau said. “For them to display such a determination to win was awesome. They displayed more energy and confidence than any other team in the field.
“I think this speaks so well for the development of our program at UK. Amy and Jill are essentially our No. 3 doubles team, for them to come out and dominate the way they did is great for UK tennis.”
UK’s top doubles team, Sarah Witten and Nathalie Roels, will make a request for an at-large bid into the elite field at the National Indoor Championships. Witten and Roels are currently ranked No. 22 in the country and have a record of 11-3. They were eliminated from Southeast Regionals by runners-up Bunn and Pinchbeck in the semifinals. Their other two losses are to the seventh-ranked Oklahoma State team of Linda Faltykova and Katia Koloynska and Buckley and Trefethen.
