The University of Kentucky rifle team fell to the visiting Murray State Racers 6183-6170 on Sunday, Nov. 10, in the Buell Armory. With both teams scoring 1551 in the air rifle competition, the match was decided with smallbore action as the Racers finished on top with a total 4632. Kentucky topped MSU in the prone position 1584-1572, but were outshot in the kneeling position, 1554-1556. MSU clinched the victory over UK in the standing position 1504-1481.
” I feel that we need to get back to the basics in standing and focus on the fundamentals of the game,” Coach Harry Mullins said. ” Overall the team did not perform poorly, it’s just that the other team turned in higher numbers.”
Turning in top scores for Kentucky in both events as junior Bradley Wheeldon, who finished in second-place overall with a combined score of 1566. Wheeldon tallied a 393 in air rifle and a total smallbore score of 1173, including a 400 in the prone position. Freshman Vicki Goss added a 1543 for UK to earn fourth-place honors overall. Other Rifle Cat scores included Melody Cook with a combined score of 1530, Lindsey Meagher with a smallbore score of 1148, and Crystal Hamilton with a 383 in air rifle action.Murray State’s Morgan Hicks grabbed first place honors with a combined score of 1576. Hicks tallied the top score in both events with a 1179 in smallbore and 397 in air rifle.
Kentucky will be back in action when they play host to the West Virginia Mountaineers on Friday, Nov. 15 and the Morehead State Eagles on Saturday, Nov. 16. Both matches are set to begin at 8 a.m. at the Buell Armory on the UK campus.
