The University of Kentucky rifle team dropped its match against West Virginia Friday, Nov. 15, 6165-6157, in Buell Armory in Lexington. The Cats had the edge in the air rifle competition, 1547-1540, but could not hold on in smallbore. UK topped the Mountaineers in the standing position 1494-1489, but were outshot in the kneeling and prone positions.
“Each match is a learning experience and I think I learned a lot as coach today,” Coach Harry Mullins said. “I’m going to give the seniors a chance to pull the team together. Tomorrow we are going up against Morehead and I think the team will rebound well.”
Junior Bradley Wheeldon finished one point shy of a school record in the air rifle with a 397. His combined score of 1565 was tops for both teams. Junior Melody Cook was second for UK and 4th overall with a 1538. Freshman Vicki Goss was right behind with a 1537. Sophomore Jeff Hamburg, shooting for the white team, tied his personal best with a 387 in air rifle.
Kentucky will be back in action Saturday, Nov. 16, when they host the Morehead State Eagles. The match is set to begin at 8 a.m. at the Buell Armory.
