The men’s tennis team defeated Morehead State Wednesday afternoon 6-0 in their first dual-match of the season. Court three at the Boone Indoor Tennis Center was kind to the Cats as both junior Rahim Esmail and sophomore Tim Morgan completed 6-0, 6-0 victories.

Playing at No. 3, Esmail had little trouble with his opponent, Ian Smith. Following his match, Tim Morgan made his dual-match debut and it was an impressive one, a 6-0, 6-0 win over Danny Arbib.

Sophomore Evan Austin, playing at No. 1 seemed to be cruising for an easy victory over Morehead’s Bennie Schmid after winning the first set 6-1. But Schmid took an early 3-0 lead in the second set and went on to win 6-4. The third set started the same way, with Schmid up 3-0. But Austin came back to tie it at 4 and won the final two games for the victory.

Freshman Alex Hume dominated his match at No. 4, a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Kim Kachel. Junior Matt Emery was next. Following a tough 7-6 first-set win, Emery got up a service break early on Marek Pawelec and went on to win 7-6(4), 6-4. Senior Elliott Datlow was next at No. 6. He also had a little trouble in the first set, taking it 7-5 over Tomi Simola. But Datlow was too much in the second set, winning 6-1.

The Cats take on Southeastern Louisiana at 7 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, Jan. 22 at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center to complete their double-header.
