The 34th-ranked University of Kentucky women’s tennis team put on a dominating performance with a 7-0 shutout of No. 50 Indiana on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center.

Leigh Bradwell and Amy Trefethen got the Cats (5-4) off to a good start when they defeated Sophie Rychlik and Jessica Groth in No. 3 doubles, 8-1. UK’s 10th-ranked doubles tandem of Sarah Witten and Nathalie Roels secured the doubles point when they defeated Sarah Batty and Martina Grimm at the No. 1 spot, 8-3, giving UK a 1-0 lead.

In singles, 48th-ranked Roels took care of Batty, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1at the No. 2 spot. With a 2-0 lead, Trefethen finished off Dominika Walterova, 6-2, 6-0. Shannon Stafford secured the victory for the Cats when she defeated Grimm, 6-3, 6-3. With the loss, Indiana fell to 5-3.

“I was pleased with our play today,” Coach Mark Guilbeau said. “This gets us back over 500 and gives us a chance to get even better as we get closer to conference play.”

With UK’s victory already decided, the match of the day took place at the top singles spot. Witten faced off against Linda Tran and promptly won the first set 6-2. The second set began with Witten breaking Tran’s serve to go up 1-0. Undeterred, Tran broke back to tie the set, 1-1. The two would go back and forth to a 2-2 tie, before Tran would go up 4-2 and eventually take a 6-5 lead. Witten fought back and again broke Tran’s serve to force a tie break. Witten would go down 3-2 in the tie breaker before winning five of the next six points to win 7-4 and ultimately win the set, 7-6, and the match. At No. 5 and No. 6 singles, Shannon Stough and Danielle Petrisko each won, 6-0, 6-1, respectively.

The Cats are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 15 when they face Northwestern at 1 p.m. and Abilene Christian at 6 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center.
