Lexington, Ky. – The University of Kentucky men’s tennis team swept Appalachian State and Murray State Wednesday, Feb. 12 in a day-night doubleheader at the Boone Indoor Tennis Center. UK (4-1) set down Appalachian State by a 5-1 count in the first match and followed up with a 6-0 defeat of Murray State in the nightcap.
Leading the way for the Wildcats was sophomore Evan Austin and junior Karim Benmansour. At No. 1, Austin defeated Appalachian State’s Erez Cohen 6-4, 6-4. At No. 2, Austin knocked off Murray State’s Adam Maskill. 6-3, 6-3. At No. 2, Benmansour cruised to an easy victory over ASU’s Ben Shuster by a 6-2, 6-0 count and dispatched Murray’s Thiago Gondim in similar fashion at No. 1, 6-0, 6-3.
Freshman Alex Hume, sophomore Tim Morgan and senior Elliott Datlow also posted straight-set victories against Appalachian State and Murray State. After dropping a tough three-set match against Appalachian State, junior Matt Emery rebounded against Murray State with a three-set victory at No. 3.
Kentucky will look to continue its winning ways at No. 31 Louisville this Saturday, Feb. 15. The Wildcats will remain in Louisville to take on the top-ranked UCLA Bruins Tuesday, Feb. 18 at the Louisville Tennis Club before hosting the 2003 USTA/ITA Men’s National Indoor Team Championships Thursday, Feb. 20 through Sunday, Feb. 23, also at the Louisville Tennis Club.
