Tuscaloosa, Ala. – The University of Kentucky men’s golf team finished the first round of the Conrad Rehling Spring Invitational in second place with a 3-over par 287. The tournament being played at the par 71 Capstone Club in Tuscaloosa, Ala., will conclude on Sunday, March 16.
Leading the way for the Cats was freshman Matt Kohn who played a sensational tournament in last week’s Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Fla. Kohn fired an opening-round 70 (-1) to land in third place going into Saturday’s second round of play. Sophomores John Holmes and Brandon Waldrop each shot a 1-over par 72 to finish the first day tied for 15th place. Seniors Mark Blakefield (2-over 73) and Ryan Coyne (4-over 75) begin the second round tied for 22nd and 38th respectively.
The Cats are tied with tournament host Alabama and sit just three strokes behind first-round leader Auburn who finished with a 284. Southeastern Louisiana (290) and Illinois (292) round out the top five. Alabama’s Lars Brovold and Toledo’s Sean McTernan are tied for top individual honors with a 2-under par 69. Second round play begins at 8:30 a.m. CT on Saturday, March 15.
