Lexington, Ky. –
The Kentucky baseball team managed only two runs on six hits, as it fell to Western Kentucky, 3-2, on Wednesday, April 16, in Bowling Green. The Cats failed to score after the second inning and left seven runners on base in the game en route to losing their first non-conference game in seven tries.
UK (14-21, 2-12 SEC) led, 2-0, until the bottom of the sixth, when Western’s Antone Towns doubled to the corner in right to score Tim Grogan and Matt Johnson and knot the game at 2-2. The Hilltoppers (19-13, 5-6 Sun Belt) then took the lead in the bottom of the seventh, scoring on David Lower’s RBI double to left field, putting WKU on top, 3-2. Spencer Graeter doubled to lead off the top of the eighth and moved to third, but the Cats could not score him, as three consecutive groundouts ended the threat.
Kentucky pitcher Aaron Tennyson was outstanding in his first career start as a Wildcat. The freshman threw 4 1/3 innings, allowing no runs on just two hits, while striking out a pair of Hilltoppers. Matt Scott (0-1) took the hard loss for the Cats. Mike Breyman and Caleb Brock had two hits each for Kentucky. Adam Prida (2-1) picked up the win for Western.
Kentucky opened the scoring in the top of the first. Graeter worked a two-out walk and came all the way around from first to score on a Breyman double to the wall in left center. The Cats got another run in the second when Brock doubled with two out to score Russ Rutherford, who reached on a single, from first.
The Bat Cats return to action on Friday, April 18, as they play host to Southeastern Conference Eastern Division leading Tennessee at Cliff Hagan Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST. All the action can be heard live at www.ukathletics.com or on 96.1 FM on a delayed basis.
