April 19, 2003

The University of Kentucky women’s golf team remained in eighth place after the second round of the Southeastern Conference Championship, shooting 23-over-par on Saturday to hold a two-day total of 620 on the par-72, 6,153-yard “Big Blue” championship course. Senior Kelly Anders and sophomore Stacy Springer both carded rounds of 77 to lead the Wildcats.

Tennessee and Florida are tied for the team lead at 16-over-par. Two-time defending medalist and SEC Golfer of the Year Kristy McPherson holds the individual lead by one stroke over UT’s Violeta Retamoza, the SEC Freshman of the Year.

After day two, Anders is tied with teammate Rachel Lester and two other golfers for 23rd place at 10-over-par. Anders had shot five-over on both days, while Lester turned in a six-over performance on Saturday to follow up Friday’s 76.

Springer and teammate Lauren George are tied with another pair of golfers for 29th place. Springer improved her first-day tally by two shots, carding a five-over round on Saturday. George dropped two shots on the Saturday, shooting a 79 in the second round. Junior Eva Gessner has had matching rounds of 82 on both days. The junior is currently in a tie for 49th place.

Kentucky added only two strokes to its total from round one on a day that saw the 12 teams average nearly four and a half more strokes per round.

The Wildcats will join Arkansas and Mississippi State in a grouping that will tee from hole No. 10 in Sunday’s final round. Gessner, Arkansas’ Jennifer Norlien and Mississippi State’s Janet Dyer are scheduled to begin play at 9:50 a.m. ET.
