ATHENS, Ga. – Kentucky sophomore Jesse Witten begins his stint in the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships Wednesday against Ohio State’s Jeremy Wurtzman. The ninth-ranked Witten will meet the 33rd-ranked Wurtzman at 9 a.m. at Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The match is Witten’s second against a Buckeye in less than two weeks; Witten fell to the Buckeyes’ Vince Ng in three sets at the NCAA Regional in Lexington on May 11.
Witten is looking to put together a strong NCAA run similar to his 2002 showing as a freshman. The Naples, Fla. native put together five consecutive wins before falling in the NCAA title match against Georgia’s Matias Boeker in two sets. Witten began his tournament run as the four seed in 2002 and is situated in the 9-16 seed designation this week.
Witten compiled a 10-13 record during the 2002-2003 dual-match and tournament seasons against 2003 NCAA singles-championship participants.
