KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The University of Kentucky men’s golf team finished the first day of the Cleveland Golf/Kiawah Island Intercollegiate tied for fifth place at the Turtle Point Golf Course in Kiawah Island, S.C. Kentucky’s team total 298 tied the Wildcats with SMU and placed them six strokes behind the tournament leaders, the University of Mississippi (292).

Mark Blakefield was UK’s top performer of the day, shooting a first round 68, which is a new career low round for the junior from Maysville, Ky. Blakefield is tied for second on the leaderboard with Pope Spruiell from Ole Miss.

All-American John Holmes finished the day tied for 10th after shooting a par-72.

The tournament originally called for two rounds today and one round tomorrow, but a downpour this morning halted play until 12:30 p.m. Tournament officials decided to cut the third round and play the second and final round tomorrow.
