Sept. 10, 2003
After a strong early start, the Kentucky women’s soccer team has once again made a name for itself on the national collegiate soccer scene, as the Cats took the No. 14 slot in this week’s National Soccer Coaches’ Association of America (NSCAA) poll. In the NSCAA Great Lakes regional rankings, Kentucky (2-1-1) is locked with Ohio State at No. 2 behind region-leading Notre Dame.
The Cats enter the NSCAA poll this week upon their stint in the Nike Carolina Classic last weekend in Chapel Hill, N.C. On Friday, Sept. 5, the Cats fell to top-ranked North Carolina, 4-0, before rebounding two days later to tie eighth-ranked Duke, 2-2. Kentucky’s No. 14 national ranking marks the highest national rank for the Cats since UK took the No. 10 slot in the NSCAA poll during the 1999 season, a year in which Kentucky advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
After entering the SoccerBuzz.com poll last week at No. 24, Kentucky moves up two spots this week to No. 22 while dropping a spot in the Great Lakes region rankings to No. 3.
This weekend, Kentucky will play host to the two-day UK Invitational at the UK Soccer Complex. Friday evening, Kentucky meets BYU (No. 12 Soccer America/No. 24 SoccerTimes.com) 30 minutes after the 5 p.m. Iowa-Rutgers match. Saturday evening, the Cats will take on Rutgers 30 minutes after the 5 p.m. BYU-Iowa match.
