LEXINGTON, Ky. – The undefeated Kentucky Wildcats (4-0-0) are set to play host to the University of Kentucky Invitational, a two-day tournament, at the UK Soccer Complex this weekend. The four-team showcase begins Friday Sept. 19 with a match-up between the University of Louisville (3-3-0) and Butler University (2-1-1) at 5 p.m. followed by a showdown between the Wildcats and Central Florida University at 7:30 p.m. The Invitational concludes on Sunday Sept. 21 with a noon match between Central Florida and Louisville followed by Kentucky-Butler at 2:30 p.m.
UK is coming off a 2-1 double overtime victory over in-state rival Louisville on Tuesday that drew 1,682 fans to the UK Soccer Complex, the fifth most in UK history. Kentucky is No. 7 in the Great Lakes Region and is undefeated after four games for the first time since 1999. The Cats recorded three consecutive shutouts to start the year before Louisville’s goal in the 42nd minute of play.
All-American candidate Jamal Shteiwi, who scored the game-winning goal against Louisville in double overtime, leads Kentucky with 7 points on the season (2 goals, 3 assists). The junior from Cincinnati, Ohio led Kentucky in scoring last season with 15 points and received third-team National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-America honors. Shteiwi now has two game-winning goals on the season and is tied for fifth on the all-time game-winning goals list at Kentucky.
Kentucky has faced Central Florida only one time in the program’s twelve year history. In 1995, the Cats dropped the Golden Knights 2-0 in Orlando. UCF is No. 9 in the NSCAA South Region and are led in scoring by sophomore Jon Imran with 5 points (2 goals and 1 assist).
Butler is 2-1-1 on the season and is currently tied with the Wildcats 2-2-0 in the all-time series. Kentucky defeated the Bulldogs 1-0 in their match-up last season at the Furman Invitational in Greenville, S.C. Butler is currently tied for the Horizon League lead in fewest goals allowed (5) and ranks second in the league in goals against average (1.18).
Louisville has a .500 record after falling to Kentucky on Tuesday. The Cardinals were the first team to score against Kentucky and have the advantage of playing at the UK Soccer Complex once already this season.
