WACO, Tex. – A pair of Wildcats stole the show Sunday at the HEB-Baylor Fall Invitational as junior Danielle Petrisko and freshman Joelle Schwenk swept the two singles consolation brackets. Petrisko took the “green” singles consolation bracket with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Auburn’s Isabel Rosenbrock while Schwenk defeated fellow Wildcat freshman Lara Maurer, 6-2, 6-0 to capture the “gold” singles consolation bracket. Maurer and Schwenk also teamed up to win the “green” doubles consolation bracket via walkover against Kit Carson and Svetlana Kouzmenko of SMU.
In the “green” singles final, Kentucky’s Aibika Kalsarieva fell to Petra Dizdar of Texas, 7-6, 6-1. Kalsarieva teamed up with Wildcat Sarah Foster in the “gold” doubles final but dropped the match to Stepahnie Balzert and Daria Potapova of Baylor, 8-5. Foster also registered a victory of significance against Katie Ruckert of Texas, winning 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-4). Freshman Christine Simpson dropped a consolation match to Ashley Calvert, 6-3, 6-3.
UK Coach Mark Guilbeau was thrilled by his young Wildcats.
“Our team has made a good statement in its first tournament of the year. This is a positive, hard-working young group. They had a lot of fun in this tournament with some good results.”
Guilbeau was especially pleased by the play of Petrisko.
“Danielle won five of six matches here and had a really impressive showing.”
The Cats return to the court on Friday, Oct. 5 when Kentucky plays host to the Kentucky Fall Classic.
