LEXINGTON –
Ashley Schillig’s 28th minute goal proved to be all Kentucky needed in a 2-0 victory over LSU before 471 fans at a rainy UK Soccer Complex. As a result, UK Coach Warren Lipka earns his 50th career conference-play victory, joining Florida’s Becky Burleigh as the only coaches to reach the 50-win plateau in 11 seasons of SEC soccer.

In the first half, Schillig eluded one defender on her approach with the ball to the LSU box and steered clear of LSU goalkeeper Robin DesOrmeaux. Schillig launched a 16-yard line drive before an LSU defender could recover, netting the Cats’ first goal.

In the 81st minute, Elizabeth Ramsey drilled a free kick from 21 yards out, striking the crossbar. The ball caromed in front of the goal, and in the ensuing scramble, Ramsey found her way back to the ball and flicked in the Cats’ second goal from point-blank range.

The Kentucky defense, headed by goalkeeper Anne Ogundele’s five saves, kept the Tigers scoreless for the first time in 2003. The Tigers came into the match averaging four goals per contest, good for third-best in the NCAA. Ogundele’s shutout is her second in as many weekends.

“Starting out 2-0 in conference play is huge,” Lipka said. “Our defenders did a great job on their assignments, and once again, Anne (Ogundele) gave us another shutout in goal. We’ll take this win and try to play just as well Sunday against Arkansas.”
