Score: Kentucky 35, Ohio 14
The Wildcats move to 3-4 with the victory, while Ohio falls to 2-5.
Series Record: UK leads the series 3-1-0. The Cats are now 27-6-1 against teams from the Mid-American Conference. UK is now 43-15 in Homecoming games, 2-0 vs. Ohio.
Kentucky held Ohio to 14 points. This is the sixth consecutive game that the Wildcat defense has held the opponent to less than 30 points. The last time that happened was 10 years ago in 1993 when the Mike Archer-led UK defense held the first six opponents of the season to less than 30 points.
The third quarter has been Kentucky’s best quarter of the season. The Wildcats took the lead for good by outscoring the Bobcats 14-0 in the third quarter. For the season, UK has outscored its opponents 59-22 in the third quarter.
Shane Boyd completed three of nine passes for 54 yards and one TD.
Boyd rushed for a career-high 85 yards tonight, including a career-long 45-yard run in the second quarter.
Boyd rushed for an eight-yard TD in the second quarter, a 13-yarder in the third quarter and caught at 30-yard pass from Lorenzen in the fourth quarter.
Boyd rushed for two touchdowns, passed for one and scored another receiving. According to the preseason NCAA record book, the last player responsible for touchdowns passing, rushing and receiving in a game was Craig Ochs of Colorado (vs. Oklahoma State on Oct. 28, 2000). The feat has been accomplished many times in NCAA history. Boyd is the first SEC player to do it since Jacquez Green of Florida (vs. Auburn on Oct. 18, 1997, exactly six years to the day).
Jared Lorenzen went 8-of-14 for 90 yards with two touchdowns. Lorenzen now has 74 career TD passes, tying him with Tim Couch for the school record.
Lorenzen has broken the Southeastern Conference career record for total offensive plays in a career. The old record was 1,560 total offensive plays by Eric Zeier of Georgia from 1991-94.
Wide receiver Derek Abney finished the game with six catches for 63 yards with one touchdown. Abney’s touchdown catch in the fourth quarter was his fourth of the season and the 17th of his career, tying him for second on UK’s career touchdown pass receptions list with Steve Meilinger (1951-53).
Abney has caught a pass in 40 straight games.
Tommy Cook caught his first TD pass of the season, a 42-yard strike from Boyd.
Several Wildcats played with injuries. Tight end Jeremiah Drobney and cornerback Bo Smith each have a broken hand while offensive tackle Antonio Hall played with a hip injury.
Andrew Hopewell blocked a punt in the second quarter, the first of his career and the first blocked punt for Kentucky this season.
Trey Mielsch got his first career start at defensive end. Jeremy Caudill, who has started at defensive end all season, started at defensive tackle.
Clint Ruth had touchbacks on five kickoffs tonight. He came into the game with touchbacks on 50 percent of his kickoffs this season.
Homecoming queen was Amelia Brown of Tompkinsville, Ky. The homecoming king was Art Rainer of Louisville, Ky.
