The University of Kentucky men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams open the 2003-04 season Friday evening against Tennessee. The action begins at 5 p.m. at UK’s Lancaster Aquatic Center.
The meet kicks off the swimming & diving parent and alumni reunion weekend at Kentucky. On Friday at 5:30 p.m., the University will induct new members of the Kentucky Swimming, Diving & Water Polo Hall of Fame. A reception will follow the meet at approximately 7:30 p.m.
UK Swimming Coach Gary Conelly, now in his 13th season with the Cats, leads Kentucky into a season of high expectations. The UK men return several key components from a 2002-03 squad that earned a 17th-place finish at the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships last March. The men placed sixth at the SEC championships while the UK women placed ninth. Returning for the men are honorable mention All-Americans Fernando Barros, Daniel Cruz, Daniel Farnham and Steven Manley, the owner of several swimming records in his native Ireland.
Sophomores Shantel Commander, Laura Graham, and Joanna McLean figure to make a positive impact for the UK women this season after swimming UK all-time top 10 times in a number of events last season as true freshmen.
