LEXINGTON ? The University of Kentucky swimming & diving squads enjoyed a banner day Saturday at UK?s Lancaster Aquatic Center, as the UK men and women each defeated South Carolina, marking the first time the two squads have swept the Gamecocks in the same meet since January of 2000. The 22nd-ranked Kentucky men soundly defeated South Carolina by a 131-108 margin, while the UK women came from behind to score a 128-115 victory.
Senior Amanda Bourgeois, a Spartanburg, S.C., native, tallied a Kentucky victory in the 500-yard freestyle, beating her nearest competitor by over five seconds. Sophomore Shantel Commander won the 400-yard individual medley in 4:29.32 while sophomores Laura Graham and Brennan Moore took second and third. Junior Jessica Siegele took first in the 200-yard backstroke and Graham claimed the 200-yard breaststroke. The Cats took the top three spots in the three-meter diving event, as sophomore Jessica Thompson claimed a narrow victory over freshman Joey Brown, while freshman Kari Retrum took third. Junior Caitlin Muldoon placed first in the 1000-yard freestyle, finishing the event in 10:25.46.
Junior Daniel Cruz and sophomores Steven Manley and Daniel Farnham picked up two individual-event victories apiece for the UK men. Cruz captured the 200-yard freestyle and butterfly events, Manley claimed the 500 and 1000-yard freestyle events and Farnham took the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events. Junior Jerram Chudleigh placed first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:52.54.
The UK women earned their first conference victory since defeating Arkansas two seasons ago and their first win over South Carolina in three seasons. The UK men knocked off the Gamecocks for the first time in two seasons. Both the UK men and women move to 3-2 and 1-2 in Southeastern-Conference competition.
The Cats return to the pool on Friday, Jan. 30 at Georgia Tech.
