The Kentucky track & field teams will continue the 2004 indoor season traveling to South Bend, Ind., on Friday, Feb. 6-7 to compete in the Notre Dame Mayo Invitational. On Saturday, UK will also be competing at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Neb.
The meet will mark the third competition for the Cats, as they opened the season three weeks ago with the Kentucky Invitational. UK has fared well in both indoor meets this season, the women?s distance medley relay team provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in a time of 11:20.05 last weekend at the Rod McCravy Memorial. The team also broke a 17-year old school record with the time. The women?s squad was highly successful in other distance events as well, as three Cats finished in the top-five in the mile run. Brooke Patterson, Caitlin Phillips and Beth Heimann all provisionally qualified for the NCAA?s in the event while smashing personal bests. Phillips? previous time of 4:55.97 was broken by more than ten seconds, as the senior crossed the finish line in a fourth-place time of 4:45.40. Patterson came in second in 4:44.55 and Heimann came in a time of 4:47.67.
The Kentucky women sprinters all enjoyed success at the meet, as Talonda Ingram came in first place in the 200-meter and 60-meter dashes and Olobusola Adeagbo finished in second in both the 60-meter hurdles and the 400-meter dash, where she broke a personal best record in a time of 56.34.
The Kentucky men also had a strong showing in distance events last week, as Kris Landers came in first among active college runners with a personal-best time of 4:08.97 in the mile run. Thomas Morgan, who ran with the Kentucky Milers Club, finished in first place, while Justin Amason and Ryan DeLuca also posted top-10 finishes for the Cats in the event. James Doaty captured a first-place finish of his own in the 800-meter run in 1:51.96.
The Cats rounded out their top finishes in the field events, as Jeff Chakouian won the shot put with a toss of 63-02.75, more than eight feet from his closest challenger. Rachel Kohler topped all competitors in the high jump with a 5-06.00 mark and Kristen Mowrey garnered a fourth-place finish in the same event.
