Kentucky commenced a furious singles rally after dropping the doubles point but came up just shy in a 4-3 loss to No. 35 LSU Friday at the W.T. Robinson Tennis Stadium in Baton Rouge, La. The Cats fall to 12-7 and 3-2 in the SEC, while LSU improves to 9-5 and 1-4 in the conference.
After LSU earned doubles wins at the two and three positions, Kentucky?s Sarah Foster wasted little time to even the tally at one. The freshman out of Lexington Christian Academy made short work of LSU?s Camila Caliari, turning in a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles. Fellow freshman Christine Simpson turned in a solid showing herself at No. 6, defeating LSU?s Daysi Espinal by a 6-2, 6-1 count. The Tigers bounced back at No. 2, as Rocio Fantilli scored what proved to be a crucial second-set tiebreaker win over UK?s Lara Maurer to even the score.
Kentucky?s Aibika Kalsarieva turned away a late rally from LSU?s Jessica Ferguson to earn a straight-set win at No. 1 to put the Cats on top. However, the Tigers? Marina Chiarelli and Lauren Seaman scored victories at the three and five singles positions to seal the LSU win.
The Cats look to bounce back Sunday when they meet No. 67 Arkansas in Fayetteville.
