Athens, (Ga.) ? Kentucky could muster just two runs on seven hits against the Georgia trio of Michael Hyle, Bo Lanier and Mitchell Boggs on Saturday, as the Cats fell to the Bulldogs, 7-2, in Athens. The loss dropped Kentucky to 20-21 and 5-15 in Southeastern Conference play. Georgia improved to 29-15 and 11-9 in the league.
The big blow for Georgia came in the bottom of the sixth, when the Bulldogs scored four runs on three hits and three walks. Nine Bulldog batters came to the plate in the inning and Josh Morris capped the rally off with a two-run single, giving UGA a 7-1 lead.
?We just did not have much energy today at all,? UK head coach John Cohen said. ?I think maybe we?re just asking too much from our players right now, but we?re going to keep moving ahead and continuing to improve. We will be ready to play again tomorrow.?
Sloppy Kentucky defense led to two Georgia runs in the bottom of the third. Josh Smith reached on an error and scored when Justin Holmes? single to right eluded Billy Grace and went all the way to the wall, allowing Holmes to end up at third. He would score on Marshall Szabo?s single to give Georgia a 2-1 lead.
UK got its first run in the top of the third, as Justin Scutchfield doubled to lead off the inning, moved to third on a Joe Naill sac bunt and came in to score when Michael Bertram singled through the right side of the infield.
The Bulldog lead stretched to 3-1 in the fourth when Jonathan Wyatt reached on a fielder?s choice, stole second base and scored on a Josh Smith single.
Kentucky added a second run in the eighth inning when Jake Kungl singled to plate Mike Breyman, who had led the inning off with a single of his own.
The two teams will complete the three-game series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. (ET) contest. All the action can be heard live on 96.1 FM in Lexington, as well as on the UK web site at www.ukathletics.com. Live stats of the game are also available on the web site.
