Kentucky senior Daniel Cruz made a productive Olympic trial debut in the 200-meter butterfly preliminary round Friday morning at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials ? Swimming in Long Beach, Calif.

Cruz, a Palm Coast, Fla., native swimming for the Daytona Beach Swim Club, took fifth with a time of 1:59.26 in the 41-competitor 200-meter butterfly preliminary session. He earns a spot in tonight?s semifinal round at 8 p.m. EDT. Former Olympian Tom Malchow leads the event, while world-record holder Michael Phelps is currently in second place. The event final is set for Saturday evening.

Former Wildcat Rachel Komisarz, fresh off of her victory in Thursday?s 100-meter butterfly final, advanced to this evening?s semifinal of the 200-meter freestyle with a sixth-place time of 2:01.81. Dana Vollmer took first with a time of 2:00.24. The semifinals are set for 8 p.m., while the final is slated for Saturday evening.
