Four months before the season begins, season tickets for the 2004-05 women?s basketball campaign are already in high demand. With the return of sharp-shooting senior Sara Potts and point guard Angela Phillips, along with the nation’s sixth-ranked recruiting class, over 600 season ticket orders have been received in the last two weeks alone.
?It?s really unbelievable this early demand for women?s basketball tickets,? assistant athletics director for marketing Micheline Schott said. ?Our UK Hoops marketing campaign will launch in September and we?re already way ahead of the game this early in the year. It?s really exciting.?
Because of the excitement created by the hiring of new coach Mickie DeMoss, Kentucky fans bought tickets at an unprecedented rate last year. Season ticket sales reached nearly 3,000 after totaling only 140 prior to her arrival. UK ranked No. 1 nationally in increased attendance from last season (3,488 more than the 2002-03 average), ranked No. 2 (behind perennial power Tennessee) in Southeastern Conference attendance, and was 16th nationally (5,182) in attendance average.
?I?ve been in this business 28 years and it?s just a phenomenal thing to witness,? DeMoss said. ?I?ve been at places where we couldn?t get people in the stands for anything and even at Tennessee it took several national championships to push the attendance to where they average 13,000. Here, we have such a tremendous opportunity to set the standard across the country for women?s basketball. As coaches we are doing our part to get great players in here and do the right things on the court, but the community is definitely stepping up to the plate by showing their support in such a huge way.?
