OXFORD, Miss. ? The Kentucky rifle team picked up a pair of wins this weekend over Great American Rifle Conference foes Ole Miss and Memphis to run its winning streak to three.
?I thought the weekend went very well and we learned a lot as a team,? Kentucky coach Harry Mullins said. ?We are getting better every time out and, with a young team, that?s what we need to do.?
The Wildcats opened the weekend with a strong performance on Saturday against the Rebels by winning 4605-4579. Kentucky was remarkably consistent with a 2302 in smallbore and a 2303 in air rifle.
No shooter stood out with tremendous performance, but everyone scored solidly. Ray Geyer was the top shooter in the air rifle portion of the match with a 583.
?It was one of those flat days for us.? Mullins said. ?But, we came out and still worked hard and came away with a win over a good Ole Miss team.
A day later, the Wildcats posted very similar numbers on the same range in Oxford to beat Memphis 4601-4589. Kentucky opened a 33-point lead after smallbore and cruised to the win. The team mixed up the line up in air rifle to give a number of shooters experience.
Eric Surber led the way in smallbore with a 585 for the Wildcats which was a personal best. Ray Geyer and Chris Boggs scored a 585 and 583, respectively, in air rifle as Kentucky fired a 2303 for the second straight day.
?We felt good with the lead after smallbore,? said Mullins. ?It was good to be able to get some extra people experience. I?m very comfortable with the numbers we shot.?
Kristi Crenwelge and Vicki Goss shot as individuals in the air rifle portion and each topped the 580 plateau.
Kentucky returns to action on Nov. 7 when it hosts Murray State.
