LEXINGTON ? After scoring two game-winning goals last week, Kentucky men?s soccer standout Brandon Stewart was tabbed as the Mid-America Conference Player of the Week and named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week, it was announced Monday.
Stewart, a Dallas, Texas, native, scored two goals during the week to lead Kentucky to wins over Cincinnati and No. 17 UAB. He also anchored a defense that allowed just one goal over the two-game span.
The wins vaulted the Wildcats into the top 25 for the first time this season at No. 22 in the .
The junior defender tallied the game-winning goal against the Bearcats early in the first half as the Wildcats ended Cincinnati?s six-game unbeaten run. Three days later, he headed home a corner kick to break a 1-1 tie against UAB in the 78th minute. The win snapped the Blazers seven-game home win streak.
It is the first time in his career Stewart has earned any player of the week honor. He joins senior Jamal Shteiwi as the two Kentucky players to be honored this year by both the MAC and CSN.
On the season, Stewart has three goals, all of which are game-winners. He has started all 18 games for Kentucky on the back row.
Stewart and Kentucky return to action Sunday at 11 a.m. in the MAC Tournament at Kalamazoo, Mich. They face the winner of the Western Michigan-Marshall contest which takes place Friday. The Wildcats are the No. 1 seed in the tournament after winning the MAC regular-season title.
