HOWIE-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. ? The University of Kentucky men?s golf team was defeated 3-2-0 by Clemson in the first round of the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship. Due to rain Saturday there was a 40 minute delay of the first round this morning, causing second round play to be suspended this afternoon. Play will resume tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. ET at Mission Inn Resort in Howie-in-the Hills, Fla., where Kentucky will continue play against 12th seed, Pepperdine. The third round will begin an hour after completion of the second round.
John Holmes defeated Clemson?s Brain Duncan, finishing 2-up in match play competition, while sophomore Cale Barr landed the second defeat for the Cats. Barr beat out the Tigers? Nick Biershenk 4 and 3. Both Mark Blakefield and Matt Wells were defeated by one-hole margins. Sophomore Andrew Stephens was defeated by Clemson?s Stephen Poole.
The Hooters Match Play Championship is sponsored by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA), in association with Hooters of America, Inc. The event will be co-hosted by the Central Florida Sports Commission.
