EL PASO, Texas. ? University of Kentucky senior, Matt Wells concluded the first day of play Monday at the 30th Annual Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic, at the El Paso Country Club in El Paso, Texas. Second round play has been suspended for the evening and will continue tomorrow at 7:15 a.m. Wells is currently tied for 28th place after playing 33 of 36 holes Monday.
The All-American field also competed in the Titleist Longest Drive Contest and the Ping Putting Contest Sunday night at the El Paso Country Club. Wells claimed third in the longest drive contest with a 311-yard drive.
Wells, a native of Wilmington, N.C., is just the second Kentucky golfer to participate in the field. John Holmes played in the tournament in 2002.
Wells has finished in the top-25 at two fall tournament appearances, the prestigious Ping Preview and the Gary Koch/Cleveland Golf Intercollegiate.
