LEXINGTON ? The Kentucky rifle team split a pair of matches this weekend with a win over NC State and a loss to defending-national champion Alaska-Fairbanks.
The Wildcats began the weekend by shooting their highest score of the year in a 4635-4538 victory over the Wolfpack, which is the defending South Eastern Air Rifle Conference champion.
Freshman Chris Boggs led a group of six Kentucky shooters that fired better than 580 in smallbore with his 584 score. Three of the scores went towards the team total as the Wildcats shot a season high 2324 in the event.
In air rifle, Ray Geyer outshot teammate Vicki Goss by one as each broke the 580 barrier to lead Kentucky.
Against six-time defending national champion Alaska-Fairbanks, the Wildcats performed admirably only to come up short, 4704-4620. Geyer came out on fire and shot a 590 in smallbore, easily the best score for a Wildcat this season.
Meanwhile Jamie Beyerle led a charge for the Nanooks with a 594 as they took a 36-point lead into air rifle.
In air rifle, no Wildcat could post a 580 or better towards the team total while Alaska-Fairbanks had three shooters hit the 590 plateau. Competing individually, Kentucky?s Jared Rinker shot a team-best 580 in air rifle.
The Wildcats return to action on Dec. 4 when they host Air Force in the final competition before the end of the calendar year. Following the new year, Kentucky?s season resumes on Jan. 15 at the Palmyra Invitational.
