JACKSONVILLE, Fla. ? The University of Kentucky men?s golf team is currently tied for sixth place overall after the first day of play at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship at Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. The Cats posted a team score of 293, while senior John Holmes is in a four-way tie for first place on the individual leaderboard after firing a first-round 70 for the Wildcats.
Southeastern Conference rival South Carolina (-2) tops the team standings after one round with a team score of 286. Fellow SEC teams LSU (even), Tennessee (+3) and Florida (+4) round out the top five, while UCLA is tied with the Gators at four-over-par. Georgia State (+5) is tied with the Wildcats for sixth place.
Junior Matt Kohn also stands in the top 20 after firing an even 72 to tie for 13th overall after the first round. Seniors Mark Blakefield and Brandon Waldrop shot 75 and 76 on the day to place 38th and 50th, respectively. Sophomore Cale Barr rounds out the scoring for UK with a first-round 77.
Second round play at the MBCC gets under way at 8 a.m. on Monday, with the tournament wrapping up on Tuesday.
