LEXINGTON, Ky. ? The Kentucky women?s basketball team will play host to the Mountaineers of West Virginia Monday, March 28 at 7 p.m. EST in Memorial Coliseum in the semifinal round of the 2005 Sportsview.tv Women’s National Invitation Tournament.
The Cats charted wins over Eastern Michigan (79-68), Chattanooga (91-54) and Xavier (67-60) to advance to the tournament?s final four. The Mountaineers are 20-12 after defeating Maine (74-59), St. John?s (68-63) and Wake Forest (65-52) in WNIT action.
Iowa (23-9) which defeated Arkansas State 66-52 in the quarterfinals Thursday will travel to Southwest Missouri State Monday. The SMS Lady Bears (23-8) took a 62-60 win over Texas A&M in their third round game.
The Wildcats (18-15) are 2-0 all-time vs. West Virginia and are 20-7 vs. WVU?s BIG EAST Conference. The last time the teams met was on Dec. 12, 1992 and UK won 73-63 in the second round of the Iowa Amana Hawkeye Classic. The teams first met on Nov. 25, 1984 in Lexington. UK took a 70-63 victory that year.
West Virginia head coach Mike Carey, the 2003-04 BIG EAST Coach of the Year, is in his third season at WVU. The Mountaineers finished 7-9 in conference play this season, tying for sixth place with Georgetown and St. John?s. WVU fell to No. 2 seed Notre Dame, 70-59, in a quarterfinal game of the conference tournament. Sophomore Meg Bulger leads three players in double-figure scoring, averaging 19.3 points per game. Seniors Sherell Sowho and Yolanda Paige follow with 12.6 and 12.3 ppg, respectively.
