Eaton/Golf Pride Regional Coaches of the Year, All-Freshmen Team, PING All-Region Teams and Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars have been announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
Fourth-year Kentucky head coach Brian Craig was named the Eaton Golf Pride Regional Coach of the Year for the Midwest Region for the second straight year, while seniors John Holmes, Mark Blakefield and Matt Wells were named to the All-Region team. Holmes and Wells were also named Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars.
Craig, who was also named the 2005 Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year, returns UK to the NCAA Tournament this week. The Cats have made three appearances in the national tournament during Craig?s four years in Lexington, including an eighth-place finish in 2004. The Wildcats finished in the Top 10 in 11 of its 12 tournaments this season and placed among the top five seven times. UK won six tournaments and captured the school?s first SEC title.
Holmes added another accolade to his list of accomplishments during his UK career. The Campbellsville, Ky., native led Kentucky with seven top-10 finishes this year, including five top-five finishes. Holmes was named UK?s first-ever SEC Golfer of the Year this season and is a four-time All-SEC selection. He has received PING All-America or honorable mention honors each year at Kentucky.
Blakefield recorded four top-10 finishes this season, including a win at the Gary Koch/Cleveland Golf Intercollegiate. The Maysville, Ky., native placed in the top five three times and earned All-SEC Second Team honors following a solid senior season.
Wells has had a stellar season for the Wildcats, finishing in the top-10 twice and leading the team with his ninth-place finish at the Central Region last month. The Wilmington, N.C., product has now finished in the top-10 in four consecutive postseason appearances. His best performance this season came at the Hyatt Plantation Club Intercollegiate when he placed third after firing a season-low 68 in the final round.
The Cats will compete in the NCAA Championships at Caves Valley Golf Course in Owings Mills, Md., June 1-4.
