LEXINGTON, Ky. ? With seven years of NCAA Division I coaching experience, Doug Reynolds has joined the University of Kentucky track and field coaching staff, head coach Don Weber announced Wednesday.
?I am excited to become a part of Kentucky athletics,? Reynolds said. ?This is a great coaching staff and I look forward to the opportunity of helping the team move towards the top of the SEC and to make an impact on a national level.?
Reynolds comes to UK after spending the past five seasons as the throwing coach at the University of Kansas, during which time he was responsible for the program?s recruiting efforts, coaching and conditioning for KU throwers. Reynolds? throwers at Kansas set six school records, as well as three Big 12 Conference records, three national records, one collegiate record and captured seven Big 12 individual titles. Recently, Reynolds coached KU shot putter Sheldon Battle who finished second the 2005 NCAA Championships and fourth at the USATF Championships. Reynolds also coached Scott Russell who was a finalist at the 2005 World Championships.
?Doug comes to us with fabulous coaching credentials,? UK head coach Don Weber said. ?Unquestionably, he is one of the very best throwing coaches in the country and we are very fortunate to bring him into our program. While at Kansas, he produced multiple throwers who dominated the Big 12 and NCAA Championships. He is a great teacher of technical skills, strength training, and is a superb recruiter. With coaches Gondak, Thomas, and Tucker already on staff, Doug completes what I think is one of the very best collegiate track and field coaching staffs.?
Prior to Kansas, Reynolds had stops at Boise State (1999-00) and Arizona (1998-99). While at Boise State, Reynolds? throwers earned three Big West titles in the women?s hammer and the men?s decathlon and discus. At Arizona, Reynolds worked as a part-time assistant for his alma-mater, and was responsible for the strength and conditioning, recruiting and technical coaching.
During his coaching tenure, Reynolds has coached 16 All-America selections, two individual NCAA Champions and one collegiate record.
Reynolds, a 1998 graduate of Arizona, earned national recognition as a Pac-10 champion in the discus throw, along with a No. 1 NCAA ranking. He competed in the NCAA championships in the shot put and discus throw. In 1996, Reynolds was the NJCAA champion in the shot put and discus. He followed that performance with a bronze medal at the 1997 World University Games in the discus. In 1999, Reynolds ranked 11th in the world and fourth in the U.S. in the discus throw.
