Kentucky?s home volleyball match with Alabama on Sunday, Sept. 25 will be broadcast locally on UPN Lexington, which can be seen on Insight Cable channel 5, Adelphia Cable channel 99, Charter Cable channel 17, or over the air on WKYT Digital channel 27-2, it was announced Tuesday. WKYT-TV?s Dick Gabriel will do the play-by-play while former Kentucky coach Kathy DeBoer will serve as analyst.
?This is a great opportunity for our program and I can?t thank Wayne Martin and WKYT-TV enough,? Coach Craig Skinner said. ?This will give many Kentuckians who might not know much about volleyball the opportunity to see high-quality Southeastern Conference action. This can only benefit our program as we look to return Kentucky Volleyball to the top of the SEC.?
The Wildcats have opened the season with a 5-2 record. Kentucky is in its first season under Skinner, who spent the previous four seasons as the top assistant at Nebraska, guiding the Huskers to the 2000 NCAA title.
Gabriel, a longtime Kentucky broadcaster, called many Kentucky matches in the late 1980s and early 1990s during a span in which UK claimed two of its five SEC Championships.
DeBoer, who coached at UK from 1984-92, still ranks as the winningest coach in program history with a 209-97 record. She coached the Wildcats to their best season in school history in 1987 with a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Tournament. She owns two SEC titles (1987-88). DeBoer currently lives in Lexington and serves as general services commissioner for the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government.
