The Kentucky women?s swimming and diving team started the season Friday in grand fashion by defeating Illinois by a wide margin. The Wildcats outscored the Illini 179-119, swimming the final three events as an exhibition, at the Lancaster Aquatic Center.

Eight different Wildcat women captured victories, with senior Brennan Moore and freshman Kelly Rames winning two events a piece.

Moore, a native of Spartanburg, S.C., claimed victory in the 1000-yard freestyle and the 200 yard backstroke. Rames, in her first collegiate meet, scored the victory in the 200-yard butterfly and the 500-yard freestyle.

Southeastern Conference Diving champions Jessica Thompson and junior Taryn Ignacio each finished first in the 3-meter and 1-meter events respectively.

?We are really pleased with the way everyone raced,? head coach Gary Conelly said. ?Today really gave us a good look at our freshman and we saw a lot positive things from them. I think we are ahead of where we were at this point last season. We have a really tough meet next week against Tennessee and we are going to have practice hard to be at our best.?

The Wildcats will take part in the annual Kentucky Relays Saturday at 1 p.m. The Relays will see both the men and women in action. The meet will help both teams prepare for next weekend?s first SEC meet against rival Tennessee.
