JACKSONVILLE, Ala. ? The Kentucky rifle team fired a solid road score, but dropped a tough 4666-4655 decision to 2005 NCAA runner-up Jacksonville State on Saturday.
The Wildcats fell behind by nine points, 2327-2318 after smallbore and could not make up the difference despite a stellar 2337 air rifle score.
?We posted a good score, but not as high as I had hoped,? Kentucky coach Harry Mullins said. ?That was our lowest smallbore score of the year and I think we would have won the match had we shot the way we?re capable.?
Freshman Jason Dardas led the way in smallbore with a 585 and equaled that total in air rifle. Junior Amy Sowash was UKs best shooter in air rifle with a 586. Sophomore Ray Geyer won the individual smallbore event with a 588, but his score did not count towards the team total.
?We left more than 10 points on the board by not having Ray on the smallbore team that was the difference in the match,? Mullins said.
Kentucky returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Lincoln, Neb., to face Nebraska.
