Coming off a hard-fought 75-71 victory at South Carolina on Thursday, the Kentucky women?s basketball team is looking to continue its winning ways and capture its fourth Southeastern Conference road win this season when it meets Arkansas in Fayetteville on Sunday, Feb. 12. Tip-off in Bud Walton Arena is set for 3 p.m. EST and the game will be televised live by Fox Sports Net South and aired live on the Big Blue Sports Network (radio) with Neil Price.
Kentucky (16-6, 5-4) is in search of its first win in Fayetteville in school history after going 0-8 in its previous meetings. A win would give the Cats their most regular season victories since the 1998-99 campaign. UK finished 21-11 (7-7 SEC) that year and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
?Arkansas is a tough place to play,? UK Coach Mickie DeMoss said. ?It is never easy to win on the road in the SEC, and Arkansas seems to always have a great home atmosphere. We have proven that we can win on the road but we have to stay focused on executing our offense and shutting them down defensively. They are a very good three-point shooting team and if they get hot it could be a long night.?
In the Wildcats? win over the Gamecocks, sophomore guard Samantha Mahoney (Detroit) scored a team-high 17 points and senior forward/center Jennifer Humphrey (Memphis) brought down a game-high 18 rebounds to pace the Cats. UK used a 13-0 run mid-way through the second half to overcome a two-point halftime deficit and hang on for the victory.
Mahoney leads Kentucky in scoring with a team-high 11.6 ppg, while junior guard Jenny Pfeiffer (North Vernon, Ind.) and sophomore center Sarah Elliott (McKee, Ky.) follow with 11.2 and 10.4 ppg, respectively. Humphrey is the team?s leader on the boards with 9.5 rpg. Her rebounding average is the best by a Wildcat since All-American Valerie Still averaged 12.0 rebounds as a senior in 1982-83. She has pulled down double-figure rebounds in three consecutive games.
Sunday?s game marks the 20 th meeting in the all-time series between the Wildcats and the Lady ?Backs. Arkansas leads the all-time series 12-7 and has won six of the last seven games. The Cats took a 73-67 victory over the Lady ?Backs on Senior Day in Memorial Coliseum last year.
The game will be a battle from behind the arc. UK leads the SEC in three-point field goal percentage defense, while Arkansas is hitting a league-high 7.3 three-pointers per game. UK allows only 3.8 treys a game and is holding the opposition to just 27.4 percent from beyond the arc.
The Lady Razorbacks are coming off a near upset of No. 22 Vanderbilt on Thursday. Arkansas fell, 64-59, in Nashville. The Lady?Backs were led by Leslie Howard?s nine points and Melissa Hobbs? career-high 11 rebounds. Leading scorer Kristin Peoples (11.9 ppg) did not make the trip to Vanderbilt after re-injuring her back prior to the USC game. She is questionable for Sunday?s game. Howard is second on the team in scoring, averaging 11.7 ppg. Hobbs is Arkansas? leading rebounder with 5.0 boards per game.
