GAINESVILLE, Fla. ? The University of Kentucky men?s golf team struggled in the opening tournament of its spring season. The Cats turned in their best day of play in the final round, but could not gain any ground in a talented field as they finished 14th at the Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.
Host team Florida won the two-day tournament with a team score of 855 (+15), while the Cats finished with a total of 905 (301-307-297). Tulsa was second with a score of 861 (287-286-288), followed by Florida State with a total of 869 (291-286-292). Georgia State finished fourth at 875 (285-293-297), while LSU rounded out the top five with a two-day total of 881 (297-291-293).
Sophomore Brad Doster was the lone Wildcat to finish in the top 20 with a 16th-place score of 218 (68-73-77) to lead UK. Freshman Dan Woltman finished tied for 42nd overall with a total of 227 (80-73-74), while junior Tyler Wilson fired a two-day total of 232 (76-80-76). Freshman Andy Winings and senior Matt Kohn rounded out the scoring for Kentucky with totals of 233 (80-81-72) and 234 (77-82-75), respectively.
?This was beyond a disappointing performance for our team,? said head coach Brian Craig. ?We are very talented but a little too immature to be a contender in the Southeastern Conference at this point. We have a lot of growing up to do between now and the SEC Championship.?
The Cats return to action March 5-7 at the Hyatt Plantation Club Intercollegiate in Dorado, Puerto Rico.
