The University of Kentucky men?s golf team returns to action this weekend, Mar. 18-19, as it travels to Statesboro, Ga., for the Schenkel E-Z-GO Invitational. The invitational will be held at Forest Heights Country Club.
Of the 15 teams that played in last year?s tournament, 12 will return along with three newcomers in Alabama, Kentucky and Michigan State. Thirteen teams in the field competed in NCAA Regional play. Of those thirteen, six of the teams competing in the 2006 Schenkel E-Z-GO Invitational participated in the 2005 NCAA Championships.
The tournament will begin with a Friday practice round followed by 36 holes on Saturday and 18 holes on Sunday.
The teams participating are: Alabama, Auburn, Augusta State, Clemson, Florida, Georgia Southern, UK, Louisiana State, Michigan State, Minnesota, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Ohio State, South Carolina and Tennessee.
The Wildcats are coming off their best finish of the spring season after finishing second at the Hyatt Plantation Club Intercollegiate in Dorado, Puerto Rico.
Freshman Andy Winings turned in his third top 10 performance and the best overall finish of his career as he tied for fifth in the Cats? last outing. Sophomore Brad Doster tied for tenth overall with a score of 213 (70-70-73), which tied his best finish of the 2005-06 season. Junior Tyler Wilson tied for 16th with a three-round total of 215 (72-70-73). The Lexington native tied his career-low round with a second-round 70.
The same five Wildcats will compete for Kentucky again this weekend as Winings, Doster, Wilson, Dan Woltman and Matt Kohn make the trip to Statesboro.
”Our games seem to be rounding into form as we head into a very good field at the Schenkel E-Z-GO Invitational,? said head coach Brian Craig. ?We showed excellent progress last week and need to do the same in Statesboro as the SEC Championship is just a little more than a month away.”
